What is Mepiform Scar Dressing
Mepiform scar dressings are thin silicone dressings that are used to reverse the appearance of hypertrophic and keloid scars.
How does it work
Keloid scars are abnormal scars that grow well past the initial site of an injury to the skin. These scars do not have a defined shape and are somewhat raised off the surface of the skin. Keloid scars are made up of very dense and fibrous skin tissue. They may be the result of some type of skin trauma but they can sometimes form for no apparent reason. These scars do not usually subside without some type of treatment. That is why products like Mepiform should be applied to areas with keloid scars.
Hypertrophic scars are also raised fibrous tissue, but they are different than keloid scars in that they do not generally grow outside the boundaries of the original injury and they may sometimes resolve themselves without treatment.
How is Mepiform Scar Dressing Used
Mepiform dressings can be used on newly formed or old keloid or hypertrophic scars. They can also be used on closed wounds so that scars do not form. The layer of silicon that coats the fabric of the dressing helps the dressing stay adhered to the skin. Silicon applied to the skin can have a positive effect on these types of scars, although it may take as long as 3 months to a year to see improvement in an older scar.
Side Effects
If a rash starts to appear under the Mepiform dressing, remove it and let the skin breath until the rash is gone. Reapply another dressing for a short period and then remove it. Gradually increase the time that you wear the dressing until you can wear it 24 hours a day.
Safety Information:
These dressing can and should be worn 24 hours a day. The good thing about these dressings is that they are waterproof and can be worn in the bath or shower. However, they can be removed for the purpose of checking the wound and are easy to reapply. Mepiform can be cut to any size and one sheet of the dressing will last several days. Make sure the scarred area is clean and dry before you apply the dressing and cut it large enough so that it is slightly larger than the scar. The dressing can be used with creams or ointments, just be sure that it extends beyond the cream.
Visual Description:
Mepiform dressings come in individually wrapped laminated peel-apart pouches made of plastic and paper. The interior of the packages is sterilized using ethylene oxide. The dressings come in three different sizes, with 5 dressings to a box.
