What is Detrol LA
Detrol LA treats the medical condition called Overactive Bladder (OAB), which is experienced by as many as 1 in every 6 men and women.
How does Detrol LA work
An overactive bladder is not simply the result of getting older but is a treatable condition that should improve if a patient follows a regimen that includes a prudent diet, sufficient exercise and treatment with Detrol LA. OAB is the result of a bladder muscle that is far too active and that squeezes or contracts the bladder far too often, causing patients to experience a frequent need to urinate even when their bladder is not full. OAB sufferers may also experience uncontrollable urination and the three major OAB symptoms are therefore urgency of bladder contractions, frequency of bladder contractions and urinary or 'urge' incontinence. Detrol LA addresses the problem by calming the bladder muscle and thus reducing the number of times that the urge to urinate is experienced. Detrol LA is made of tolterodine tartrate and the active ingredient is tolterodine, a competitive muscarinic receptor antagonist belonging to that group of drugs known as antimuscarinic medications. Tolterodine's action is to bind to the bladder's muscarinic receptors and, as tolterodine is an antagonist (an agent that decreases function), the bladder muscle relaxes and contracts less frequently. Detrol LA comes in an extended release capsule and sufferers experience relief for 24 hours.
How should Detrol LA be taken
One Detrol LA capsule should be taken per day and at the same time every day. The whole capsule should be taken with liquid, and can also be taken with food but does not have to be. If a patient misses a dose, they should begin the cycle again by taking the next capsule at the usual time on the next day. Detrol LA capsules come in two different sizes and which size will be prescribed for which patient will be decided by the patients' doctor. The dosage will remain the same notwithstanding which size of capsule has been prescribed.
Side Effects
Tests have shown that taking Detrol LA may induce several side effects, the most common of which is a dry mouth. A dry mouth indicates that a patient's autonomic nervous system has been affected and the side effects caused by Detrol LA have actually been shown to manifest in several different bodily systems. The further side effects experienced include those that affected the gastrointestinal system and comprise stomach or abdominal pain, constipation and dyspepsia (indigestion). Those affecting the respiratory system include sinusitis while those affecting the central or peripheral nervous systems include dizziness. Dysuria (difficult or painful urination) may also be experienced as can abnormal vision, xerophthalmia (dry eyes) and blurred vision. Psychiatric side effects may include somnolence (being in a state of near sleep) and anxiety while general symptoms include headache, drowsiness and fatigue. Tolterodine intake may also cause further side effects in some patients, which include eye pain, chest pain, nausea, mood changes, hot or dry skin, elevated heartbeat and mental instability. Should a patient overdose on Detrol LA, they should immediately either call their doctor or visit their local poison control center or nearest emergency room.

Safety Information:
Studies have shown that several different groups of people should not take Detrol LA including those who have urinary retention issues and / or difficulty emptying their bladder due to, among other things, clinically significant bladder outflow obstruction. Detrol LA is also not to be taken by people who suffer from gastric retention disorders, gastrointestinal obstructive disorders and those whose stomachs take a long time to empty. It is also not suggested for those with uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma or those with myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular disease involving extreme susceptibility to fatigue. Further groups who should not be taking Detrol LA include both pregnant women and nursing mothers, and children. It is also not recommended for those with the rare congenital or acquired QT prolongation / Long QT Syndrome, a heart condition where the heart struggles to repolarize and settle after excitation. Finally, those people who are allergic to any ingredient in Detrol LA or who have shown hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its ingredients should also not take it.
