Canthacur General Information

Canthacur is a drug also identified under the brand name Cantharidin. In English the names will also be found under Cantharidine, and Cantharidin Preparation. If you reside in Spanish speaking territories you can find the drug under the name Cantaridina.

Canthacur is a liquid drug used to treat different forms of wart problems on the skin. Canthacur is formed by deriving specific substances produced within the Spanish Fly and Blistering Beetle along with a few other species of insects. Canthacur is one of the only wart treatment drugs which is virtually painless when applied correctly and leaves no trace of damage or scarring after use.

How Does Canthacur Work?

Canthacur is a liquid drug which removes growths in relation to several types of wart conditions. The drug has also proven to be useful in treating a condition known as "Molluscum Contagiosum" found in children. Canthacur will not treat conditions which involve warts with hairs, and should never be applied to these areas.

Another rare use which the Cantharidin may be used for is the removal of tattoos and inked body work.

Cantharidin is a component which is highly toxic, it is produced by insects such as the Blistering Beetle. The chemical is produced by a male beetle and transferred to the female after mating where the female will use the chemical to cover her eggs and protect them from predators. The high level of toxicity is what makes Cantharidin work in the treatment and removal of wart conditions.

How is Canthacur Used / Applied?

Being Canthacur has highly toxic components the application of the liquid can only be legally and safely applied by your prescribing doctor during visit intervals for treatment.

Canthacur is only applied directly onto infected areas of the skin and not the skin itself using tools such as a q-tip or applicator which comes in the original containing bottle. The reason it is so important to not get Canthacur directly onto the skin is because the drug may cause not only skin irritation but adverse pigment affects on the areas of skin which the liquid has come into contact with. After the drug has been applied to the infected areas a film will be applied over the area to keep the solution from drying. Patients will be urged to not remove this covering material for at least 4 hours after it has been applied.

Typically only one application directly onto infected areas is enough to achieve desired results, but may still require future visits with your doctor to be sure your condition is not increasing, or not being affected by Canthacur.

Side Effects

Some patients may be sensitive to Canthacur but the likeliness of this occurring is relatively rare, if the patient is sensitive to Canthacur symptoms may occur which are alike to; tingling sensations throughout applied areas or burning and extreme tenderness in the applied regions of the warts and surrounding skin surface.

When Canthacur is accidentally placed directly onto the skin, if the solution is not cleaned off in time a blister may form on the infected portion of the skin. On rare occasions the overall pigment tone of that section of the skin may be damaged and the skin may appear lighter or darker in comparison to the rest of the uninfected portions of the skin.

Safety Information:

Canthacur should only be used and applied by a licensed doctor due to the dangerous levels of toxicity within the drugs chemical make-up and structure.

Canthacur is a drug which should only be applied directly onto infected wart related regions of the skin and not directly onto the skin itself to avoid skin irritation and injury. Canthacur should never be applied onto a wart region which has not been verified by a doctor as being a condition which the medicine may treat effectively. Always avoid applying to warts with a to several hairs growing off of the wart due to the fact that this may be a sign of a much more serious health or skin condition.

If Canthacur does get directly onto skin, rinse and clean the infected portion of skin immediately although adverse reactions may still occur but less extreme and shorter lasting.

Dosage:

When Canthacur is applied to infected areas of warts or similar wart conditions typically the application amount will be 3 mm or less depending on the severity of the condition.

Visual Description:

Canthacur is a clear liquid applicant. Canthacur comes in a bottle with a thin tipped applicator attached to the inside of the lid. Bottles contain approximately 7.5 ml of said solution.
