About Catapres

What Catapres is used for

CATAPRES tablets help reduce high blood pressure in patients that did not respond or who experienced unacceptable adverse events when using other medicines for high blood pressure.

What Catapres does

CATAPRES tablets belong to a group of medicines called antihypertensives which are used to reduce high blood pressure. The clonidine hydrochloride ingredient of CATAPRES is a vasodilator which causes widening of the blood vessels and therefore an increase in blood flow. When there is less resistance to blood flow, blood pressure is lowered.

When Catapres should not be used

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you say yes to any of the following as you should not take this medicine:

  • You are hypersensitive or “allergic” to the active ingredient clonidine hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this product or component of the container (see What the important nonmedicinal ingredients are:)

  • You have a slow heart rate due to heart problems

  • You have pheochromocytoma (tumour of the adrenal gland)

What the medicinal ingredient is

CATAPRES tablets contain the active ingredient called clonidine hydrochloride.

What the important nonmedicinal ingredients for Catapres are

CATAPRES tablets 0.1 mg and 0.2 mg contain: colloidal silica, dibasic calcium phosphate, lactose, maize starch (0.1 mg dried), polyvinylpyrrolidone, soluble starch and stearic acid. 0.2 mg also contains FD&C Yellow #6.

What dosage forms Catapres comes in

CATAPRES is supplied in white plastic bottles of 100 tablets. It is available in tablet strengths of 0.1 mg (round, white flat tablets with beveled edges. One side is scored with each half imprinted with 01C); and 0.2 mg (round, orange flat tablets with beveled edges. One side is scored with each half imprinted with 02C). The reverse side of all tablets bears the Ingelheim Tower.

Interactions with Catapres

Tell your doctor or pharmacist all the medicines you are taking including all prescription, non-prescription and natural health products, particularly if you are taking the following medicines:

  • any other medicine containing clonidine

  • diuretic tablets (commonly called water tablets e.g. frusemide)

Proper Use of Catapres

Follow your doctor’s instructions about when and how to take your medicine and always read the label. Do not change your dose or stop taking CATAPRES without first talking to your doctor.

Usual dose

Initial dose: The usual starting dose is 0.1 mg tablet twice daily (morning and bedtime). Elderly patients may benefit from a lower initial dose.

Maintenance dose: After a period of 2-4 weeks, further increments of 0.1 mg per day may be necessary until the desired response is achieved. In those instances where it is not possible to have equal amounts of drug at each of the dosing intervals, taking the larger portion of the total daily dose at bedtime may minimize transient adjustment effect of dry mouth and drowsiness.

The therapeutic doses most commonly employed have ranged from 0.2 mg to 0.6 mg per day given in divided doses. Usually doses above 0.6 mg per day do not result in a further marked reduction in blood pressure.

Overdose

If you accidentally take too many tablets, you should get medical help immediately either by calling your doctor or by going to the nearest hospital accident and emergency department. Always take the labelled medicine container with you whether or not there are any CATAPRES tablets left.

Missed dose

If you forget to take your medicine, take your dose when you remember and then your next dose at the usual time. If you forget a dose completely, do not take two doses at the same time.
