What is K-Dur
K-Dur is a drug targeted to replenish the body's store of a single electrolyte. It is prescribed to either prevent or treat low blood levels of potassium. Potassium depletion can result from high sodium diets, alcoholism, certain diseases such as Cushing's syndrome or anorexia, chronic use of some medications like diuretics and laxatives, persistent vomiting, chronic diarrhea, influenza and surgery involving the bowel. Potassium chloride is the chemical name of the active ingredient in K-Dur.
How K-Dur Works
K-Dur works simply by providing potassium as a treatment for potassium deficiency.Once ingested, the potassium chloride it contains is absorbed by body fluids and taken directly into cells needing potassium for a variety of metabolic processes. Potassium chloride is essential for the cells involved in producing and releasing energy during a metabolic action. This drug also helps nerve cells transmit impulses related to the contraction of the heart muscle as it beats, in addition to other muscle movement.
How K-Dur is Taken
K-Dur should not be taken on an empty stomach due to the possibility of gastric irritation. Unless directed otherwise, each dose of K-Dur should be taken with a meal and a glass of water, milk or another liquid. Stomach upset may also be reduced by dividing the dose so that you take smaller doses (2 to 4 times a day). No more than 20 milliequivalents should be taken in a single dose. K-Dur has been formulated to release the medication slowly once a dose is taken. Tablets should be swallowed whole. Do not break the tablets, crush, chew or suck on them as this may cause side effects.
Side Effects
K-Dur can have serious side effects. Call your doctor at once if you experience any of the following: leg discomfort; muscle weakness or a limp feeling; confusion, anxiety, or feeling as though you may faint; extreme thirst or increased urination; an uneven heartbeat; severe pains in your stomach; ongoing vomiting or diarrhea; bloody, tarry or black stools; coughing up vomit or blood that resembles coffee grounds; and, a numbness or tingling feeling around your mouth or in your hands or feet.
