Qualaquin Information

Qualaquin is the brand name for quinine and is commonly used to treat malaria which is a disease caused by parasites. The bite of a mosquito can transfer the malaria into the body of a human. This is the form of quinine that must be prescribed by a doctor.

How does Qualaquin work

Qualaquin is used strictly for the cure of Malaria. Malaria is caused by the entry of parasites into the blood system by the bite of a mosquito. These parasites travel through the blood system entering body tissues such as red blood cells or into the liver. Parasites are extremely difficult to diagnose and locate in a human body and even more complicated and challenging to treat. The quinine in Qualaquin enters a patient's system and travels through the blood system following the Malaria parasite, locating them and killing the parasites living inside red blood cells. The parasites in other body tissues may need another medication to kill them.

How is Qualaquin used

Once a medical professional has diagnosed a patient with Malaria the drug Qualaquin is prescribed and taken with food to lessen any stomach upset. It is extremely important to take the full dose as prescribed by the doctor for the exact amount of time. As with some other medical diseases and conditions, the symptoms may improve before the parasite is completely destroyed. However, if the symptoms do not improve within two days of taking this medication the patient is instructed to contact their doctor immediately. If a dose of this medication is missed the patient should take the dose as soon as they remember. When a dose is forgotten for more than four hours, then the patient should skip that dose completely because taking this medication to replace a missed dose may cause an overdose.

Side Effects

There are many serious side effects that taking Qualaquin can cause. The patient should stop using this medication if any of the following symptoms occur: hives, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or any swelling of the mouth and throat area. Side effects include but are not limited to fever, chills, confusion, vomiting, diarrhea, extreme breathing problems, chest pain, heart palpations or fluttering, shallow breathing, cessation of urination, and severe headaches. There is a list of other side effects such as ringing in the ears, dizziness, sweating, blurred vision, nausea, muscle weakness, tingling and redness of the skin, and stomach pain. There are also many drugs that should not be taken with this medication. Your medical doctor should be aware of all medications you are taking, prescribed or over the counter and also any types of vitamins or herbal products. If the patient has any of the above reactions to this medication they should stop taking the medication and contact their doctor.

Primaquine may be prescribed for the parasites in other body tissues.
