What is Aggrenox

Aggrenox is a prescription medicine used to reduce the risk of strokes in patients with a previous history of strokes and blood clots. Aggrenox contains a low dose of aspirin and extended- release dipyridamole. These two drugs combined are used to decrease the risk of strokes in people who have previously had blood clots or "mini-strokes" (also referred to as a transient ischemic attack).

How does Aggrenox Work

The two medications work independently as well to prevent strokes. Aspirin is commonly known for its ability to reduce substances in the body that can cause pain, fever, and inflammation. Its purpose in Aggrenox is to soothe any pains inflicted to the patients and keep fighting away any infections. Dipyridamole keeps platelets in your blood from forming together, creating clots. Blood clots are a serious condition and can lead to strokes and/or death. When blood clots occur, blood cannot travel to a section of the brain, causing that part of the brain's oxygen supply to be cut off. Within only a couple minutes of no oxygen, those brains cell die and the abilities controlled by those cells are lost. Aggrenox uses the two medications together to prevent any serious health risks in patients who have previously had clots. By doing this, the patient is allowed to live freely without any serious threats of a stroke.

How to use it

After you have been prescribed by your doctor to take Aggrenox you will begin taking two dosages a day- in the morning and in the evening. Be sure to take the medication exactly as your doctor prescribed it. You can take Aggrenox with or without the accompany of food but be sure to drink a full glass (8 ounces) of water with each dose. Aggrenox is taken orally and meant for the pill to be swallowed whole. The medication inside each pill is meant to release slowly inside the body. Breaking or opening the pill before dosage will cause too much of the drug to be released and can be harmful to your body.

Side Effects of Aggrenox

The most common side effect of Aggrenox is mild headaches and for most patients, they will go away on their own. However if the headaches are becoming intolerable it is important to talk to your doctor before stopping your medication because they can give you an alternative dosing schedule which could reduce the headaches and their intensity. Another common side effect is minor stomach discomfort which should be able to disappear on its own. Keep in mind that because Aggrenox contains aspirin, the risk of bleeding will heighten because any bleeding will be harder to stop. Remember to talk to your doctor if you are experiencing any side effects that cause a major discomfort.

Safety Information:

If you have a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding, hemophilia, heart disease, congestive heart failure, or a recent heart attack, live disease, kidney disease, or low blood pressure then you should speak to your doctor about this before taking Aggrenox. Do not take this medication if you have asthma, nasal polyps, or a history of an allergy to an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) such as Advil, Motrin, and Aleve among others. Because Aggrenox contains aspirin be sure to talk to your doctor if you are, plan to become, or may be pregnant because it can cause harm to an unborn baby.

Dosage:

Pill - 25mg
Take one capsule orally twice a day, one in the morning and one in the evening.

Visual Description:

The pill is a long and round tube shape, with one half being a dark red color and the other half being a cream color. There is a little picture of a building and the text "01A" printed on the cream side. It should come in a white box with red and green stripes.

About Aggrenox

What Aggrenox is used for

AGGRENOX capsules are prescribed to help prevent a stroke in people who have had a prior stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA).

Stroke is caused by the interruption of the blood supply to the brain and often results in brain damage. A stroke can affect people in different ways. The damage caused by a stroke can affect your senses, your ability to move, your speech, your ability to understand speech, how you behave, how you think, and your memory.

Transient Ischemic Attack is a temporary interference with blood supply to the brain. The symptoms of TIA include dizziness, light-headedness, numbness, and difficulty swallowing. They may last for only a few minutes or several hours.

AGGRENOX has been prescribed to you. DO NOT give it to anyone else, even if you think they have the same condition as you.

What Aggrenox does

AGGRENOX capsules belong to a group of medicines called antiplatelet drugs. Platelets are very small structures in blood, which clump together during blood clotting. AGGRENOX works by preventing the early formation of blood clots (a process called thrombosis).

  • if you have allergy to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs);

  • if you have fructose and/or galactose intolerance.

What the medicinal ingredients for Aggrenox are

Proper Use of Aggrenox

Usual dose

Adults (including the elderly)

The recommended dosage is one capsule twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening, with or without food. The capsules should be swallowed whole without chewing.

Alternative regimen in case of intolerable headaches

In the event of intolerable headaches soon after starting treatment with AGGRENOX, talk to your doctor about an alternative dosing regimen. This regimen is comprised of one capsule of AGGRENOX at bedtime and a low dose of ASA in the morning. Headaches should become less of a problem as treatment continues, usually within one week. After a week or so without headache, your doctor will generally recommend that you return to the usual twice-daily dosing regimen of AGGRENOX.

Children and adolescents

AGGRENOX is not recommended for children or adolescents below 18 years of age.

Overdose

Do not exceed the recommended dosage of AGGRENOX. If you accidentally take too many capsules, you should get medical help immediately, either by calling your doctor or by going to the nearest hospital. Always take the labelled medicine container with you whether or not there are any AGGRENOX capsules remaining. Symptoms of overdosage, especially in the elderly patients, are: ear buzzing, sensation of decreased hearing acuity, and headaches.

Missed dose

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but if it is almost time for the next dose, wait and take your next dose. Do not take a double dose.

Side Effects for Aggrenox and What to Do About Them

You should be aware that AGGRENOX as a prescription medicine may cause side effects. In most cases these side effects are mild and may disappear with continued treatment. Discuss with your doctor the risks of taking AGGRENOX against the expected benefits.
