Inderal LA is a beta blocker drug prescribed to treat a variety of medical problems. It is used to treat problems such as high blood pressure, chest pain, hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, adrenal gland tremors, hereditary tremors, migraine headache, and abnormal heart rhythms.
How does Inderal LA Work
Inderal LA is a beta blocker drug. Beta blockers work by blocking certain chemicals in the body, such as epinephrine, that affect the heart and blood vessels. This helps to reduce the force and rate of heart contractions, which, in return, decreases the heart's demand for oxygen. This decreased need for oxygen reduces heart rate and lowers blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure can prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.
How is Inderal Taken
Inderal LA should be taken as prescribed by a physician. It is typically prescribed to be taken once a day, however this depends on the severity of the patient's medical problems. This drug works best when taken before a meal, but it can be taken before bedtime. Inderal LA should be taken regularly. If it is not taken regularly, the patient's symptoms may get worse. If a dose is missed it should be taken as soon as it is remembered, unless it is within eight hours of the next dose. In this case, the missed dose should be skipped and the patient should continue on their regular schedule.
Side Effects
Inderal LA can cause side effects. Some common side effects are congestive heart failure, allergic reactions, fatigue, weakness, light-headedness, short-term memory lapse, nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, constipation, rash, fever, impotence, low blood pressure, slow heart beat, depression, insomnia, and vision changes. Vivid, unusual dreams can occur as your body is adjusting to the medication. Inderal LA can also reduce blood flow to the hands and feet, which will make them feel cold. Some severe side effects are shortness of breath, swollen ankles and feet, severe mood changes, easy bruising and bleeding, numbness in the limbs, fainting, and unexplained weight gain. If any of these occur, a physician should be contacted immediately. If an allergic reaction occurs there will be a rash, swollen tongue and mouth, trouble breathing, and severe dizziness. The patient should contact a physician immediately if an allergic reaction occurs.

Inderal LA should not be taken if the patient has a short blood supply, a slow heartbeat, severe congestive heart failure, and bronchial asthma. Pregnant women should not use Inderal LA unless they absolutely need it, as it can cause an infant to have a low birth weight, low blood sugar, and a slow heartbeat or slow breathing. Breastfeeding mother should use caution while taking this drug because it can pass to the infant through breast milk. Inderal LA can also adversely react with other drugs. The prescribing physician should take note of medications that the patient is currently taking. Inderal LA can also react poorly with alcoholic beverages.
