Combivent Inhaler General Information

Combivent is a respiratory medication used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and in some cases, chronic asthma. It is administered in the form of a metered dose inhaler or as a nebulizer treatment.

What is it used for?

The Combivent inhaler is intended to reduce bronchospasms in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which is a condition that is a combination of emphysema and chronic bronchitis. COPD is usually a result of long-term smoking and is characterized by problems with breathing, excessive coughing and wheezing. There are also times when Combivent is used to treat severe cases of asthma. Combivent works through two distinctly different modes of action: anticholinergic and sympathomimetic. The anticholinergic action is achieved through the active ingredient ipratropium bromide and the sympathomimetic action is achieved with the active ingredient albuterol sulfate. . Both drugs are used to treat respiratory conditions on their own, but it is believed that when used in conjunction, the bronchodilator effect is more pronounced at recommended dosages.

How to take Combivent Inhaler

Combivent is a drug primarily used in an inhaler form. Patients should try and clear their lungs of phlegm as much as possible before taking their dose. After the lungs are cleared, a patient is advised to let as much air out of their lungs as possible. Then the patient's lips are wrapped around the mouthpiece and they should activate their inhaler by pressing down. In the same motion they are advised to deeply breathe in and subsequently hold the inhaled medication in their lungs for several seconds before resuming normal breathing.

Side Effects

The most common and mild side effects of taking Combivent are mild to moderate headaches, fatigue, runny nose, bronchitis and coughing. If a patient experiences any of these, it is worth consulting with their physician as a safety precaution. Most of the common side effects related to sinus issues can be treated with conventional, over-the-counter sinus medications and in the case of mild to moderate headaches, any analgesic that has treated such conditions in the past can be utilized. If a patient notices severe side effects, they should report them to their practitioner immediately. Serious side effects are: abnormal breathing problems, increased anxiety, any sort of chest pain, severe constipation that will not go away, arrhythmia, tachycardia and any other allergic type of reaction that will not desist in a normal period of time.

Other Brand Names
