What is Advair Diskus?

The Advair Diskus (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol inhalation powder) is a corticosteroid and a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist. It is prescribed for long term use in those over four with asthma and/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) such as emphysema or chronic bronchitus. It is a treatment intended for severe asthma only, where the asthma is not controlled adequately on other medications. COPD exacerbations can also be treated with the Advair Diskus. It is not, however, intended for the treatment of acute bronchospasm, for the first treatment of astma or COPD, or hypersensitivity to milk.

How to use Advair Diskus

For the treatment of asthma in those ages twelve and up, Advair is taken as a single oral inhalation twice per day approximately twelve hours. Those ages four to eleven and those taking the medication for the treatment of COPD should take the medication once daily. More frequent dosages will not increase the benefits of the medication. After the patient inhales, the mouth should be rinsed without swallowing. It is recommended that once asthma symptoms have been stabilized, the medication be slowly cut back to the lowest possible level.

Side Effects & Risk

Those who are taking Advair Diskus as medication increase their risk of contracting pneumonia. Symptoms of developing pneumonia include fever, chills, cough, and increasing breathing problems. Also increased are the risks of osteoporosis due to a decrease in bone mineral density cataracts, and glaucoma. If you are being prescribed long acting beta2 agonists for asthma, do not take Advair. There is a risk of death. Also, an infection in the mouth and throat may occur. Along with these risks, be aware that this is an immunosuppressant that can cause infections to be worse than usual. For children, it is possible that growth will be affected. Advair Diskus interacts badly with cytochrom P450 3A4 inhibitors such as ritonavir, monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants, beta-blockers, and diuretics.

Safety Information:

If your asthma is being controlled well with inhaled corticosteroids and only occasional short-acting beta2-agonists, Advair is not recommended. Those under four years old should not be prescribed Advair and only the lowest dosage for those beween four and eleven years of age. Those taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, beta-blockers, diuretics, or have osteoporosis should not take Advair. Always discuss treatments with your doctor. Those taking long-term beta2-agonists should not take Advair. Pregnant and nursing women should be cautious as there is little data on the effect of Advair Diskus on a fetus. Those over the age of 65 show a higher risk of adverse effects from the Advair Diskus.
