What is Mometasone Nasal Inhaler
Intended for use by adults and children 2 years of age and older, the mometasone nasal inhaler is used in the treatment of allergies and nasal polyps, and it is only available by prescription.
How it Works
This medication is sprayed directly onto the nasal surface, and it helps reduce the inflammation of the nasal passages that is normally associated with allergies. (This swelling may be caused by pet dander, dust mites, tree and grass pollen, and other indoor or outdoor allergens.) The patient's condition should improve within 11 hours after using the mometasone nasal inhaler, and the maximum benefit of using it is usually realized with a week or two. Also, as is the case with many other medications, its effectiveness is based on its regular use.
When it is used
The mometasone nasal inhaler is used in the treatment of symptoms resulting from seasonal and ongoing allergies, including sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose, and sinus congestion. It is in the category of medications known as "topical steroids," and it is also the only medication of this type that has been clinically proven to aid in the prevention of seasonal allergies, along with treating them after the fact. Ideally, patients should begin using the inhaler from 2 to 4 weeks before the expected allergy season begins in order to obtain the best results.
Side Effects
A headache or sore throat may result from using the mometasone nasal inhaler. If these or other symptoms (unusual nasal pain, bleeding, or irritation or blood-tinged phlegm or mucus) persist or become more severe, patients should contact their healthcare provider promptly. Signs of an allergic reaction to this medication include a rash, swelling, itching, dizziness, and difficulty breathing, and when they are evident, they should be treated immediately and its use should be discontinued.
