What is Allegra

Allegra is a prescription drug classified as an antihistamine, and is used to block histamine in the body. Histamine is the cause of many symptoms associated with allergic reaction, including itchy eyes, sneezing, and runny nose.

How is Allegra Used

Allegra is used to treat symptoms that are associated with seasonal and year-round allergies, and is approved for use by ages 6 and older. It can also be used to successfully treat hives and itchy skin associated with skin allergies. Allegra works by simply by blocking the histamine, ultimately decreasing the symptoms, usually within one to three hours.

Taking Allegra

You should only take Allegra if the medication has been prescribed for you by a physician. You should always follow the directions on your prescriptions label. Allegra is usually prescribed for people suffering from seasonal allergies, year-round allergies, and skin allergies. It is taken by mouth, usually once or twice a day. These tablets work best when taken with a full glass of water and on an empty stomach. For optimal effects, Allegra should be taken on a regular schedule. If you miss a dose, you should take the medication as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to time for your next dose you should just skip the dose.

Side Effects

Some mild common side effects have been reported by patients using Allegra. Most of these are manageable and lesson as you continue taking the medicine. These common side effects include headaches, back pain, cold or flu like symptoms, middle ear infections. You should contact your doctor if you experience an accelerated heartbeat, or skin flushing. Mother's who are nursing should also be aware this medicine may pass through your milk.

  • Visual Description:

    Allegra comes as an oral tablet in a circular or shield shape, and are usually tan, pink, or brown.

    Directions for Use

    Allegra-D sustained release caplets should be swallowed whole on an empty stomach.

    Never exceed the recommended dose.

    Adults and children 12 years of age and over: 1 caplet every 12 hours.

    Do not administer to children under 12 years of age.

    Avoid prolonged use unless advised by a physician.


    Caution

    If you have kidney disease, consult your physician, before using this product, as your dosage may need to be reduced.

    This product should not be used if you are pregnant or nursing, unless under the advice of a physician.

    Do not take Allegra-D within 2 hours of taking an antacid that contains aluminum hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide (e.g., Maalox), as these antacids may alter the effectiveness of Allegra-D.

    If nervousness, dizziness, or sleeplessness occur, discontinue use and consult the doctor.

    Do not use Allegra-D caplets with other antihistamines and decongestants. Consult a physician prior to use of Allegra-D if you are taking any prescription drugs.

    Consult a physician prior to use of Allegra-D if you are suffering from the following conditions: thyroid disease, narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention (difficulty in urination due to an enlargement of the prostate gland), severe hypertension (high blood pressure), severe coronary artery disease (heart disease), receiving a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor or within 14 days of stopping use of MAO inhibitor.

    Allegra-D caplets should be swallowed whole, do not break or chew the caplet.

    Store medication in tightly closed container in a cool, dry place, away from children. Protect from light and moisture.

    Microcrystalline cellulose, cornstarch, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, carnauba wax, stearic acid, silicon dioxide, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and polyethylene glycol.
